Gut Health: More Than Just a Buzzword

Updated: Mar 29, 2023

Have you heard about gut health lately? I’m sure you have, it's been a hot topic. For good reason! Our gut, also known as the gastrointestinal tract, is a vital part of our health and wellness. Not only does it help us digest our food and eliminate toxins and waste, but it also houses trillions of bacteria called the gut microbiome. In fact, we have more bugs in our gut than we do cells in our body! These bacteria play a role in practically every aspect of our health, including our digestion, immunity, mental health, weight, and even our sleep.

Did you know that an imbalance in the gut microbiome, also known as gut dysbiosis, can lead to a variety of health issues? These can include IBS, IBD, allergies, obesity, asthma, autoimmune conditions, eczema, chronic inflammation, food sensitivities, and even Alzheimer's, ADHD, and autism. That's right - pretty much anything you might be dealing with has implications that stem back to the gut.

So, what can we do to support our gut microbiome and keep our gut healthy?

By adopting a healthy diet filled with fiber, fermented foods, and probiotics, reducing stress, getting enough rest, and avoiding antibiotics and drugs that can disrupt our gut microbiome.

However, there are some unexpected things that can cause our gut to become dysregulated. These include NSAIDs, birth control, antacids, steroids, chronic inflammation, stress, infections, and eating foods you may be allergic or sensitive to. Sometimes, gut health issues are overlooked because the symptoms are not always severe or acute. They can be chronic and nagging, causing individuals to dismiss them as normal or trivial. Common symptoms of gut health issues include bloating, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and heartburn. Although these symptoms can range in severity, they can still have a significant impact on daily life and overall well-being.

It's also important to keep in mind that gut health issues can be misdiagnosed or delayed in treatment due to their symptoms being easily attributed to other factors such as stress or a poor diet. Over-the-counter medications can also mask the symptoms, leading us to ignore the underlying problem.

In conclusion, gut health and its massive colony of tiny friends hold immense power over our health and wellness. By prioritizing gut health, even if your problems seems unrelated, we can empower ourselves and reduce our risk of developing various health conditions. Plus, we'll have more energy, joy, and resilience in our daily lives!
